Square is a useful tool for small businesses that need to be able to take credit card payments on the go. This handy iPhone app allows users to accept credit cards using their iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad and a simple card-reading attachment device.
Business owners must first apply for an account. After being approved, the subscriber receives a dongle in the mail, which is a free card reader that plugs into the mobile device. The program allows users to track additional information such as top customers, tips, taxes and payment location. It also meets all PCI security standards.
As of 2010 Square charges business owners a 2.75 percent processing service fee as well as 15 cents for each transaction. Users without the swipe tool can accept credit cards by punching the numbers in on the keypad, but they must pay 3.5 percent of the transaction amount rather than 2.75 if they use this method. Cardholders can sign for transactions over $25 on the touch screen; no signature is required for transactions less than $25.
Pros:
Square does not charge users annual fees, monthly charges, contracts or hidden fees.
Cons:
Square does not work as well with iPhone 4 as it does with older iPhones and iPads. The 3-part steel band that functions as an antenna causes a variety of malfunctions from not providing any feedback after swiping a card to turning the icon on and off.
Early versions of the dongle were thin, users said that they felt cheap, and cardholders had to swipe their cards multiple times before they would read. In October of 2010 Square released a new version of the dongle that corrected many of the original problems. The new version is made with a higher-quality of plastic, has added width and does not require multiple swipes to read the information.
